Annie Ford, Port Douglas Gran Fondo Festival
"My motivation to fundraise was driven by the need to support and protect the reef. Every action and dollar counts, and while reducing global fossil fuel emissions is essential, it's also important to support local, grassroots organisations working on the front lines. It's not too late to act and give future generations the chance to experience what we have been lucky enough to love."

Cassandra Eaton, Cairns Marathon Festival
"Participating in the Cairns Marathon Festival was a memorable experience, not just for the race itself but for the opportunity to raise funds for the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, a cause that’s incredibly close to my heart. I’m proud to share that I performed well in my race, finishing as the first female in my team representing HMAS Stalwart when she berthed in 2023. It was a moment of pride for both my crew and me.
My connection to the Great Barrier Reef is more than just admiration; it’s a deep, patriotic bond. At 18, I enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy with a purpose to protect our oceans and serve a cause greater than myself. Even as a child, the ocean felt like a second home to me. The Great Barrier Reef, in particular, always held a special place in my heart. I grew up fascinated by National Geographic documentaries, especially those that showcased the Reef. Though I hadn’t seen it in person until my visit to Cairns in 2023, the reality surpassed even the most vivid images from television. The Reef was more breathtaking and awe-inspiring than I could have ever imagined. Protecting the Great Barrier Reef is, to me, akin to protecting the very essence of Australia.
The Reef embodies the strength, resilience, and uniqueness of the Australian spirit. It’s a part of our nation that I’m profoundly proud to serve."
Tom Marshall, Brisbane Marathon
"I don't want them to look back on our generation and ask why we didn't do something while we still have hope of saving the Reef. This is just one small way I can do my bit and positively contribute to a better future."
